Traditional Vietnamese Dipping Sauce (Nuoc Mam Cham)
This Vietnamese Dipping Sauce (Nuoc Mam Cham) is also called the “awesome sauce”. Everyone in Vietnam loves it and every family has a unique recipe. We ate a lot of different versions of this “must eat” dipping sauce and we found out that everyone likes this special fish sauce mixture in a different way. The Vietnamese try to use the acids from different kind of vinegars, lime or lemon juice. It is also essential what brand of fish sauce is used for this recipe. Every fish sauce has its own intensity and some recipes combine multiple types of fish sauce for a truly potent punch. We also found out that the sugar levels also vary greatly with the recipes ranging from super sweet to “Is there really sugar inside?”.
Nuoc Mam Science
In the end we like to say that there’s no wrong way to make this dipping sauce as long as you love the taste! With this Nuoc Mam Cham recipe we focused on our own memories of the favorite sauce from Vietnam. But you can easily adjust this recipe to suit your own taste.
Ingredients
125 ml water
20 ml fish sauce
60 ml lime juice
40 g sugar
2 tbs finely chopped garlic
2 finely chopped Thai chilis
There is only one step: In a small bowl, mix water, sugar, lime juice, fish sauce, chopped garlic and chilis until the sugar is dissolved.
Serve our traditional Vietnamese Dipping Sauce with your favorite dish. It also can be a non Vietnamese dish. We prefer to eat the sauce with “Egg-Fried-Rice”. It fits perfectly together!
You can store the remaining portions in a jar and refrigerate. Enjoy our Nuoc Mam Cham during one week.
